Festival History: From Christmas Pickles to Summer Celebration

Did you know Berrien Springs was once known as the Christmas Pickle Capital of the World?

It all began with a quirky and charming local tradition rooted in the legend of the Christmas pickle — a mysterious green ornament said to be hidden in Christmas trees, with the lucky finder receiving an extra gift or good fortune. Berrien Springs embraced this festive folklore and began celebrating with a one-of-a-kind Christmas Pickle Festival, attracting national attention and plenty of smiles each holiday season.

For years, residents and visitors gathered in December to honor the pickle in all its glory — complete with parades, pickle ornaments, and a holiday twist unlike any other. The event brought warmth, laughter, and community pride during the cold winter months.

As time passed and traditions evolved, the spirit of the festival lived on — but with a fresh new spin. Today, the Berrien Springs Pickle Festival is a summer celebration, taking place every July 4th, and has grown into a beloved hometown event filled with family fun, unique vendors, community contests, and of course… plenty of pickles!

Though the snow has melted and the ornaments are packed away, the heart of the festival remains the same: celebrating community, tradition, and the pickle that started it all.

Come see how Berrien Springs continues to honor its quirky claim to fame — now with sunshine, smiles, and brine!
